There’s strict new advice to stay home and self-isolate for Ontarians with compromised immune systems, underlying health conditions and anyone over the age of 70 to avoid the risk of contracting COVID-19.
Chief medical officer Dr. David Williams said Monday he is “strongly recommending” people in those circumstances do not go out except for essential reasons, and preferably to have necessary goods delivered.
“We need to do more,” Williams added in a statement.
“Where possible, you should seek services over the phone or internet or ask for help from friends, family or neighbours with essential errands.”
Williams also ramped up advice for all Ontarians to leave home only for essential reasons to help keep the new coronavirus from spreading and jeopardizing the most vulnerable.
“The lives of many Ontarians … will depend on your actions over the coming days and weeks,” Williams said.
Essential reasons for leaving home include medical appointments, grocery shopping, picking up medicines, walking pets and helping the vulnerable.
“To the fullest extent possible, you should limit the number of these essential trips,” Williams said, stressing that physical distancing of at least six feet or two metres from others is crucial.
“Please do not underestimate the impact that your actions will have in helping to stop the spread of this virus.”
