Dear Editor:
April 29 marked the one-year anniversary of the proclamation of Flamborough’s flag and coat of arms by Bishop Ralph Spence (on behalf of the Governor General) at the annual general meeting of the Waterdown-East Flamborough Heritage Society at Carlisle Golf and Country Club.
Envisioned as a way to promote local history and identity in our community, these important symbols have been popping up all over our region. The Waterdown BIA has done an excellent job of promoting our beautiful grant of arms, as has the Flamborough Review (giving it a permanent home in the opinion section of the paper). Community businesses such as Corby Custom Framing in Carlisle have been proudly displaying the arms to their patrons and the Flamborough flag can be seen in front of new businesses (Cascata Bistro, Carlisle) and old (Royal Coachman, Waterdown), as well as at community institutions such as Kitching Steepe and Ludwig (Waterdown) and Westfield Heritage Village (Beverly). Waterdown District High School has been flying the flag faithfully this past year, and other schools are following suit (Guy Brown Public School has it displayed inside).
For our first anniversary, I would like to pay tribute to the members of the Grant of Arms Committee that met for two years as designs were created: the mothers and fathers of the Flamborough arms and flag: Saguenay Herald Dr. Forrest Pass, Cindy Allen, Wilf Arndt, Viola Collins, Ryan DeCaire, Robert Flosman, Cecil Hamilton, Kim Janjic, Janine Matetich, Kyle Menagaldo, Ruth Nicolson, John Stalker, Jeff Vanderwal, Diane and Don Woods.
Images of the Flamborough arms, as well as flags of various sizes, can be purchased through the Flamborough Heritage Society at www.wefhs.myhamilton.ca.
