FAITH MATTERS: Announced by angels

Do you believe in angels?

A recent survey, conducted by the Angus Reid Institute, confirmed that the number of people in Canada who believe in angels continues to hover consistently around 62 per cent. And, of course, angels have been a part of the story of Jesus’ birth, which many would have celebrated as a part of the recent Christmas festivities.

Do you know what part angels played in the story of Jesus’ birth? Angels worked as messengers, delivering instructions or warnings from heaven.

Do you know what messages the angels delivered?

To the priest, Zacharias, the angel said that his wife, Elizabeth, though long past childbearing age, would have a baby boy and that they were to name him John.

The angel also explained that the baby had been sent by God to prepare the way for the messiah.

To Mary, the angel said that she had been chosen to be the mother of a boy named Jesus, who would be known as the son of the most high. He would be very great, ruling an everlasting kingdom upon the throne of his ancestor David. The Holy Spirit would miraculously cause conception to take place, which meant that this child, formed in her womb, would be the son of God.

To Joseph, the angel said that he should not fear to take Mary to be his wife. Her child had been conceived by the Holy Spirit. When born, Joseph was to name the boy Jesus, designating that he was born to save his people from their sins. On two other occasions, an angel instructed Joseph to flee harm’s way, and later told him when it was safe to return.

To the shepherds, the angel said that in Bethlehem, a saviour had been born, the messiah who is lord of all. A choir of angels then joined in to announce that through this birth, God’s glory would be revealed and his favour and peace extended to mankind.

The babe, the son of God, creator and saviour of mankind, though announced by angels, was noticed by so few. But to those who did receive him, to those who chose to believe he was who the angels announced him to be, to them was given the joy of experiencing through the work of the Holy Spirit, a miraculously transformed life, free from sin and full of the joy of being reconnected with God.
