The Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair is a few months away, but now is the time to get started on projects, say organizers.

BASEF is a free competition of science, technology, engineering and math projects open to all grade 7 to 12 students in Hamilton, Halton Region, Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant Counties, and Six Nations. It is being held March 26-29 at Mohawk College.

Online registration opens Feb. 3, but you need to start now so you are ready to enter, say organizers.

BASEF is sponsored by ArcelorMittal Dofasco, which has donated $10,000 to the event to allow 18 new $500 awards for student projects and four $250 awards for outstanding teachers are being offered.

In addition, over $150,000 in prizes, scholarships and all-expense paid trips to the national and international fairs will also be awarded at the 2014 fair.
